Defense News in Brief: 101 Critical Days of Summer Mid-Term Update

The weekend of July 12-13 marked the midpoint of the 101 Critical Days of Summer. There were seven motorcycle fatalities, two vehicle fatalities and one pedestrian fatality during the first half of the summer and we still have a significant portion of the second half left. These losses are tragic and sobering and remind us that we must double down on our efforts to apply the principles of risk management in all our efforts and mitigate the risks we identify.

Navy Week returns to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Aug. 4-10, 2025, for the first time since 2019. As part of a nationwide outreach effort, Sailors will connect with the local Sioux Falls community through a variety of performances, educational events, and service projects.

LAE, Papua New Guinea – Returning to Papua New Guinea following last year’s visit to Port Moresby and Wewak, the mission team will work to strengthen relationships, and bolster host nation capacity in order to provide humanitarian services, and support efforts to prepare and respond to potential natural disasters in the Indo-Pacific region. Engagements for this year’s mission are scheduled to take place across Lae and Port Moresby.
